Frequently asked questions
BASICS & GETTING STARTED
What is Kombucha?
Kombucha is a naturally sparkling, fermented tea crafted from tea, sugar, and a living culture of bacteria and yeast (known as a SCOBY).
Through fermentation, it transforms into a crisp, refreshing drink with a gentle tang and fine, lively bubbles—naturally containing organic acids and live cultures that can support a healthy gut when enjoyed as part of a balanced diet.
Does Kombucha contain sugar?
Sugar plays an essential role in making Kombucha.
It’s added at the start to feed the live culture (SCOBY), which uses it during fermentation to transform the tea into kombucha. As the culture consumes the sugar, it produces the drink’s signature tang, natural bubbles, and beneficial compounds like organic acids and live cultures.
By the time you receive it, much of the sugar has already been used, but a small amount still remains. Because kombucha is a living product, fermentation can continue over time—meaning it may gradually become less sweet and slightly more tart, especially if stored at room temperature.
For this reason, kombucha is best kept refrigerated to help maintain its flavour and balance.
Do you have seasonal flavours?
Yes! Lil Lixir is always researching and developing new flavours. Stay tuned :)
Which flavour should I try first?
If you’re new to kombucha, we recommend starting with our more approachable fruit flavours. These tend to be lighter, fruitier, and less tangy. Once your taste buds get used to that signature kombucha zing, you can explore our bolder, more complex flavours.

STORAGE AND SHELF LIFE
How should I store my Kombucha?
Keep your kombucha refrigerated (2-4 °C) to maintain freshness and slow down fermentation.
Does Kombucha contain alcohol?
Kombucha naturally contains a very small amount of alcohol due to fermentation, but it is typically below 0.5% and considered non-alcoholic.
There are some jelly-like substance in my Kombucha, is it spoilt?
Not at all—what you’re seeing is completely normal. The jelly-like substance is likely a natural formation of beneficial cultures (often called a SCOBY), which can develop during fermentation.
It’s a sign that your kombucha is alive and active. As long as there’s no unusual smell (e.g. foul or rotten) or visible mold (fuzzy spots in green, black, or white), your kombucha is perfectly safe to enjoy.
If you’re ever unsure, feel free to reach out and we’ll be happy to take a closer look.
Why does my Kombucha taste different from batch to batch?
Because we use real fruits and herbs, the flavour of our kombucha may vary slightly from batch to batch, depending on each harvest—making every brew a unique experience.
As our kombucha is live and unpasteurised to preserve its health benefits, fermentation continues even after bottling. Over time, you may notice the taste becoming less sweet and more tart—this is completely natural and still perfectly enjoyable.
To slow down the fermentation process and preserve its flavour, we recommend storing your kombucha refrigerated at 2–4°C.
SAFETY & DIETARY INFORMATION
I feel bloated after drinking Kombucha. Does it mean Kombucha is not suitable for me?
For first time drinkers, start slow and let your body ease into the benefits. Check out our STARTER bundle specially curated for new drinkers.
As kombucha is naturally fermented, some people may experience mild bloating and gas at first. This is completely normal and usually lifts in 1-2 weeks as your body adapts to the probiotics and carbonation.
